We all have a common interest in comic books and it is nice to have a place to share thoughts on the subject, but having non comic book topics gives the forum a more conversational feel. I belong to another forum and it is very popular because it feels like meeting friends for coffee.

I second that. Nothing major, just a small corner of the forum to post a quick thought or two. Something to keep the ball rolling.

If you aren't going to talk about the site's ideas and content, then why come here? That makes no sense to me.

Just building a community, dude. No harm. It's already an incredibly small pool, so if a particular non-comics post sparks a discussion or a debate, I say go for it. Plus, you never know, you could bond with someone who will be in a position to help you down the road.

I guess it doesn't do any harm, then. I'm just an old curmudgeon.

For me, I already felt a sense of community because we've all come here (I assume) to learn and establish something in the evolution of comics. That's a bond of sorts. That's just my take on it.

I think making a non-comic-book-related section of the forum is a great idea. What kinds of categories do you envision? Food, Entertainment, that sort of thing…?

You could probably get by with just a single "Off Topic Discussion" zone, and not really have to stratify it any more specifically than that.    That would prevent that section from overshadowing the main thrust of the forum intention.

Well, I'm always up for some talk about beer, cheese and coffee… but I suppose an "Off Topic Discussion" zone works as well (and Max makes an excellent point about not wanting it to overshadow the main thrust of the site.)

I think this is the best idea too.

I'm not sure if it's worth doing or not, but I used to be pretty active on http://www.hybridz.org (a technical forum for restoring and modifying classic nissan z cars), and what they would do is not count any of the posts in the off-topic threads towards a users post count since people often equate high post count with status in the forum heirarchy, and they wanted to make sure that pecking order was determined by your contributions to the technical threads and not the funny joke threads.  Food for thought, I know at that time they were using vBulletin for their forums, not sure if wordpress gives you the same level of control.

That's a great thought — I'll see if I can implement that. Thanks!

Hey — I've created the forum "Off-Topic Discussions" under "General Topics." Have at! And thanks for all your input.
