Batman 66, the much anticipated DC digital books starring the Adam West Batman, is out today. I thought it was a pretty fun offering and DCs first attempt to really make use of the digital format as opposed to presenting what are essentially print comics in a digital form. I'm certainly interested in following it for at least one more issue, but I think that there is certainly room for improvement.

What Worked:

The dialog is pitch perfect. You can hear the voices of Adam West and Burt Ward as you read. The villain was slightly off model but not enough to distract from the experience.

The sound effects worked extremely well and captured the feel of the original series very nicely, while expanding on the traditional "Pow", "Bang" and "Wham".

What Didn't Work:

The panel transitions are awkward in places and caused me a bit of confusion. There was at least one point at which I read a panel twice because I thought an element had changed when it hadn't. It's something I've never experienced with Thrillbent.

The colors imitate the dot matrix of a comic book from 1966 and I think this is a mistake as it seems to have the effect of muting the palette. I think the strip would be better served with more bright, vibrant, solid colors like the ones Marvel uses in their Masterworks reprints. I want to feel like I'm watching the show on a modern hi-def TV not on my grandmother's analog set with a coat hanger for an antenna.

Batman 66 is tailor made for the digital cliffhanger format but they don't quite capture that here. Without giving the ending away I can say that if you are hoping for Batman and Robin to end up in a fiendish death trap seemingly without a hope of escape you will be disappointed.
